At the 1999 SIRC colloquium in Dunedin, Yuxiao Li, Peter Whigham, George Benwell and Nick Mulgan presented a paper on the design of a general-purpose three-dimensional spatial information system. The paper addressed the representation, storage and handling of three-dimensional objects. A photographically convincing scene and a spatial database capable of maintaining volumes, relationships and geometry are related problems, but they are not the same problem.
